How information fusion centres are transforming maritime security across the Indian Ocean region.

The Regional Maritime Information Fusion Centre (RMIFC) has concluded a multi-agency maritime security coordination exercise focused on improving regional information exchange and strengthening cooperation between participating States.

The exercise brought together maritime authorities, liaison officers and operational stakeholders to test communication procedures, information-sharing workflows and coordination mechanisms in a simulated regional maritime security scenario.

Throughout the exercise, participating teams reviewed maritime reports, vessel movement data and operational updates before consolidating them into a shared regional maritime picture. This process demonstrated the importance of timely and accurate information exchange when responding to incidents that may cross national maritime boundaries.

The activity also provided an opportunity to assess existing procedures for receiving, analysing and sharing maritime information. Participants identified areas where communication channels, reporting formats and escalation procedures could be further improved.

RMIFC emphasised that regional maritime security depends not only on operational assets at sea, but also on the quality of information available to decision-makers. Reliable information fusion can help national authorities better understand developing situations and coordinate responses through the appropriate national and regional mechanisms.

The lessons captured during the exercise will contribute to future capacity-building activities and continued refinement of RMIFC's regional information-sharing procedures.
