Why maritime awareness matters to sustainable ocean development.

Regional maritime stakeholders have highlighted the importance of reliable maritime information and security cooperation in supporting sustainable blue economy development.

The discussions brought together representatives from government institutions, maritime industries, regional organisations and development partners to examine how stronger maritime awareness can support economic activity across the Indian Ocean region.

Participants noted that shipping, ports, fisheries, tourism and offshore industries all depend on safe and predictable maritime environments.

Maritime incidents, illegal activities, environmental degradation and weak information exchange can disrupt trade, reduce investor confidence and create additional risks for coastal communities.

RMIFC’s information-fusion role contributes to the broader maritime environment by helping participating States develop a clearer understanding of activities occurring across regional waters.

Improved situational awareness can support authorities responsible for navigation safety, fisheries management, environmental protection, port operations and maritime security.

The dialogue also emphasised the value of cooperation between public institutions and maritime industry stakeholders, particularly where commercial operators can provide relevant information that contributes to shared maritime awareness.
