Emerging technologies are reshaping the future of maritime surveillance.
RMIFC is expanding the use of satellite-enabled maritime monitoring tools to strengthen regional maritime domain awareness and improve the Centre’s ability to analyse vessel activity across large areas of the Indian Ocean.
Satellite-derived information can complement existing maritime data sources by providing additional visibility over areas where conventional coastal monitoring systems may have limited coverage.
The enhanced capability is intended to support analysts in identifying vessel movements, comparing reported positions with observed activity and examining patterns that may require further attention.
Information obtained through satellite-enabled services is not considered in isolation. RMIFC analysts correlate it with other authorised information sources, including vessel tracking data, national reports, maritime notices and regional liaison inputs.
This fusion process enables analysts to develop a more comprehensive maritime picture and reduce the risk of relying on a single information source.
The technology is particularly valuable when monitoring remote maritime areas and supporting analysis of vessels whose movements may require additional verification.
RMIFC will continue working with participating States and technical partners to strengthen analytical skills, improve data interpretation and ensure that technology supports practical regional maritime information requirements.
