Statement on the Decrease of IUU Fishing Incidents in Q1 2025
RMIFC has launched a regional marine pollution information-sharing initiative aimed at strengthening the exchange of information related to pollution incidents, environmental risks and maritime response activities.
Marine pollution can affect multiple coastal States, particularly when oil, hazardous substances or floating debris move across maritime boundaries due to ocean currents and prevailing weather conditions.
The initiative encourages participating authorities to share relevant information promptly through established channels so that affected States can build a clearer understanding of the location, scale and possible movement of an incident.
Information may include initial incident reports, vessel details, weather conditions, observed pollution areas, response activity and relevant environmental information.
RMIFC’s role is to help consolidate authorised information and contribute to a broader regional picture that can support competent national environmental and maritime authorities.
The initiative also promotes cooperation between maritime administrations, environmental agencies, port authorities and regional partners.
By strengthening the flow of information between these institutions, participating States can improve awareness and support more timely national and regional decision-making.
